Local SEO rewards consistency more than genius. Most businesses that dominate their local market are not doing anything exotic. They are doing the fundamentals completely, while their competitors do them halfway. This checklist is the complete version, organized so you can work through it in order and know nothing important is missing.
Bookmark it, work through a section a week, and by the end you will have covered the signals that decide who shows up when nearby customers search.
1. Google Business Profile: your highest leverage asset
No single asset influences local visibility more than your Google Business Profile. It feeds the map pack, powers the knowledge panel, and increasingly supplies the details AI tools use when they recommend local businesses.
- Claim and verify your profile, then check that your business name matches your real world signage (no keyword stuffing).
- Choose the most specific primary category available, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Fill out services with descriptions, not just names. Google’s Business Profile help center documents every field, and the sparse ones are usually where competitors slack.
- Add photos monthly: your team, your work, your location. Profiles with fresh photos consistently outperform stale ones.
- Answer the questions in the Q&A section yourself before someone else answers them wrong.
- Post updates a few times a month. Offers and event posts keep the profile visibly alive.
2. Reviews: volume, velocity, and replies
Reviews are a ranking factor, a conversion factor, and raw material for AI recommendations all at once.
- Build a repeatable ask: a text or email with a direct review link, sent right after the job wraps.
- Aim for steady velocity rather than bursts. A review a week beats twenty in January and silence until June.
- Reply to every review, positive and negative. Replies signal an attentive business to both readers and algorithms.
- Never buy or incentivize reviews. The risk to your profile is not worth the shortcut.
3. On site local signals
Your website confirms and expands what your profile claims.
- Display your name, address, and phone number in the footer of every page, matching your profile exactly.
- Build a dedicated page for each core service, written around how customers actually describe the problem.
- If you serve multiple areas, create genuine location pages with unique local detail, not copy and paste with the city name swapped.
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup so machines can read your details without guessing.
- Make sure the site is fast and comfortable on a phone, because that is where most local searches happen.
4. Citations and NAP consistency
Citations are mentions of your business details on other sites: directories, maps, industry lists. Their job is corroboration.
- Get the core set right first: Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook, and your industry’s main directories.
- Audit for old addresses and phone numbers, especially if you have moved or rebranded. Conflicting data quietly erodes trust.
- Consistency beats quantity. Fifty accurate citations outperform two hundred messy ones.
5. Local content that earns attention
Content is how you show up for searches beyond your business name, and it is what AI assistants cite when they explain topics to your future customers.
- Answer the questions customers ask you in person, one focused article each.
- Cover local angles competitors ignore: neighborhood guides, local event tie-ins, area specific pricing factors.
- Lead each article with a clear summary so readers and machines get the point fast.
6. Local links and real world relationships
- Join your chamber of commerce and relevant business associations, which usually include a member listing link.
- Sponsor local teams, events, or nonprofits you genuinely care about. Coverage and links follow naturally.
- Offer local media a useful comment when news touches your industry. One good quote can earn a durable mention.
7. Tracking: know what is actually working
Everything above is wasted if you cannot see what moved.
- Track your map pack and organic rankings for a defined keyword set, monthly at minimum.
- Watch calls, direction requests, and website clicks in your profile insights.
- Tie it together with conversion tracking on your site so you know which channels produce actual customers. This is exactly what our reporting and analytics service builds for clients.
Work the list top to bottom and revisit it quarterly. Local SEO is not a one time project, but it is also not a mystery. It is maintenance done seriously.
